Natural Methods to Increase Chances of Conceiving a Boy

Trying to conceive comes with challenges, the most important part of conception is having a healthy baby. Some couples may have specific preference which makes trying to conceive even more and more challenging and complicated.

It is very important to note that you cannot determine the sex of your baby when trying to conceive but there are some ways to improve your chances of swaying the gender of your baby. Most of these theories are not facts nor have been scientifically proven but some couples claim success in using these methods.

Have you ever heard of the “Shettles Method”, “Billings Method” or “Whelan Method”?

There are three scientific methods the Shettles, Billings and Whelan Methods that claim some degree of success for gender pre-selection or swaying. These methods are contradictory and may not work for you.

The Shettles Method

The Shettles method claims a 75% success rate. It is all based on timing, and the fact that the baby`s gender is determined by the chromosome carrying sperm. According to DrShettles the girl sperm (X-chromosome) are stronger but swims slower, the boy sperm (Y-chromosome) swim faster, are fragile and survive for shorter periods.

To conceive a Boy using this method: sexual intercourse should occur as close as possible to the moment of ovulation. To track your ovulation, purchase one of The Lem Box for Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPK).

The Shettles method suggests deeper penetration during sexual intercourse, so the sperm can be deposited near the uterus opening for the boy sperm to reach the egg first.

The Billings Method

The Billings method claims a 94.9% success rate. This method involves timed intercourse based on cervical mucus/fluid texture. To use this method you will need to have some experience or be taught by a trained instructor. With the knowledge that cervical mucus change day by day during the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle, interpretation of cervical mucus is very crucial. Throughout the course of each menstrual cycle the cervical mucus is generally dry and sticky, the days leading up to Ovulation the cervical fluid becomes clear, stretchy, watery and slippery, the cervix is also soft. During the Peak the mucus has a distinctive slippery sensation and the appearance of raw egg-white and very stretchy. After ovulation the cervical fluid becomes thick, sticky and opaque.

To conceive a Boy using this method: Sexual intercourse should take place before the Peak, preferably two days before the Peak and should then be avoided until the fourth day after the Peak.

The Whelan Method

The Whelan Method claims a 57% success rate and also based on timing. According to this method, to increase the probability of conceiving a boy, couples should have intercourse between four and six days before ovulation. This method is a direct opposite of the Shettles method for conceiving a boy.

Other Theories

  • The woman has to have an orgasm, which can affect the vaginal PH. If the woman has an orgasm, it creates an alkaline environment in the vagina that is more favorable to the boy sperm.
  • Since the boy sperm prefers an alkaline environment, it is best to eat alkaline rich foods such as apricots, avocado, orange juice, almonds, carrots, lentil, fresh lemons, tomato sauce, cherries, and cantaloupe.

Note: There are limited amount of research studies in supporting all theories and methods, if you are only having sexual intercourse in a narrow window in order to increase your chances of swaying gender, then you are significantly reducing or delaying your chances of getting pregnant or conceiving.
A recent research study found that there are no morphological differences between human X sperm and Y sperm and also that the Y sperm do not swim faster than the X sperm.
